Swimming & Lifeguards
Yes, you can swim at Malibu Lagoon State Beach, at the Surfrider Beach end, where LA County lifeguards are on duty in daylight hours. LA County notes that swimming areas there are limited. Before you go in, check LA County Public Health's beach advisories, and stay out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after rain.
Swimming at a Glance
Where to Swim
Swim in front of a staffed lifeguard tower at Surfrider Beach, and away from the surf lineup. LA County lists swimming, surfing, diving and fishing among the beach's activities, so the water is shared. California State Parks also lists swimming and a beach area for the park.
The lagoon is a tidal wetland. State Parks presents it for nature walks and bird watching, not swimming; see Bird Watching.
Lifeguards
LA County lists lifeguards at Surfrider Beach during daylight hours. Ask the tower about rip currents and the day's conditions. In an emergency, call 911.
Water Quality
Malibu Creek flows into the ocean through the lagoon, right at the beach. LA County Public Health gives two standing rules for all county beaches:
- After rain: avoid ocean water for at least 72 hours after significant rainfall. Bacteria can stay high that long or longer.
- At any time: avoid water contact near flowing creeks and storm drains.
California State Parks points visitors to the LA County Public Health beach advisories page for current warnings and closures. The County also has a recorded beach-closure hotline: 1-800-525-5662.
Facilities
LA County lists restrooms and showers at Surfrider Beach. State Parks lists outdoor showers for the park. There is an accessible portable restroom in the lagoon parking lot.
Swimming Checklist
- Check the LA County Public Health advisories page.
- Skip the water if it has rained in the last three days.
- Pick a spot in front of a staffed lifeguard tower.
- Stay clear of surfers and of the lagoon outlet.
